18 Miles

For the last several weeks, I’ve been spending a lot of time at 1871, watching the walls and structure take shape. I asked our construction guys for some data on how much “stuff” they’re using in the build-out, and was blown away by the response. I thought I’d share.

  • They’re installing more than 3,200 linear feet of light fixtures. That means if you strung our lights end-to-end, you’d reach from the Merchandise Mart to the Sears Tower.
  • We will have 3,400 square feet of glass at 1871, including what might be the world’s longest whiteboard … 143 feet!
  • 5,000 carpet tiles, which will be used in enclosed spaces to absorb sound.
  • And the best part … by the time they’re done, we’ll have more than 18 miles of communications cabling at 1871 to support our high-speed bandwidth!

The construction process is moving fast and everything’s tracking according to our schedule. We can’t wait until spring, when Chicago’s digital designers, engineers and entrepreneurs will start putting all this “stuff” to good use!

Code Academy joins 1871

In early May of 2011, I finally met a young entrepreneur I’d been hearing about from many folks around Chicago’s startup scene: Neil Sales-Griffin.  We met up before he was the MC of the CEC’s Future Founders Citywide Business Plan competition.  We grabbed coffee as he turned on his iPad to share what he was up to – something called Code Academy.  I was blown away by Neil’s passion and focus on solving one of Chicago’s biggest startup challenges – our lack of great technical talent.  He had an idea to start a education firm to train talented folks how to build web applications in 11 weeks.  I bought everything Neil was selling, but wanted to see him execute – and execute he and his teammates did! Code Academy has been growing like crazy since launching in 2011 and the 1871 team is thrilled to announce our partnership.  Two classrooms at 1871 will be dedicated to Code Academy!

Check out today’s announcement post from Code Academy on BuiltInChicago.org:

Designing 1871 by Todd Heiser of Gensler

Designing 1871

By Todd Heiser, Design Director at global architecture firm Gensler.

(Kevin’s note: Todd is the design lead in creating 1871 and has inspired the many people involved with creating this plan.)

Last summer our Gensler team met with the organizers of 1871, a new center for digital entrepreneurship and collaboration taking shape right here in Chicago. Highly motivated to win the project and work on this exciting venture, we set up our materials and got ready for the dog-and-pony show that we creatives know as “the pitch.”

Our strategy: don’t talk about the design process, DO THE DESIGN PROCESS. We pulled the chairs away and enforced a standing-room only.  On the table lay our materials, and we guided the client from one step to the next all along the long length of the table.  …and we mainly focused on storytelling and the creative process.

A short time after we learned that we had won the project, long before anyone knew (including us and the client) that it would be called 1871.

Tours of other such cooperative environments followed. We visited incubators, accelerators, coworking spaces, even coffee shops—any place that could teach us how people were connecting, collaborating and getting work done in non-traditional workplace environments. We wanted to understand the “secret-sauce” of how these highly compelling work spaces, from the amenities they offer to the entrepreneurs who use them, work. After meeting with the project stakeholders to gather feedback, we assembled our research into a vision document that would guide our work as we moved forward.

As we started to define the essence of the space, we considered the amazing innovations Daniel Burnham assembled to make the grand plan of Chicago the model for the “modern city”. We thought about Chicago’s grid, how the river both defines and coexists, the lake’s edge, and even the city’s motto: “urbs in horto,” (City in a Garden). And at the end even the final selection of the building, the Merchandise Mart with its unique location at the convergence of the three branches of the river, fit perfectly into our story.

As work progressed, each Wednesday morning a rotating group of entrepreneurs joined us at 7:30 AM for an informal session we called “Danish and Design”. They offered opinions, point of view and advice, and this interaction created a highly informed and user-centered solution, reflecting a collective voice. Materiality, color, and furnishings played a big role at this stage, allowing us to sculpt a space that brings Chicago’s unique energy and ambition into our digital present.

And with our wonderfully talented and collaborative friends at VSA, we thought we thought about what happened in the months and years following the Chicago fire of 1871.  Using this metaphor from our illustrious past, and the drive and pursuit for innovation that has defined Chicago since, 1871 came into full focus.

Second 1871 Hard Hat Tour on Saturday afternoon

Yesterday afternoon we hosted the second 1871 Hard Hat Tour on the 12th floor of the Merchandise Mart.  The 100 spots sold out quickly after being posted on Thursday and we welcomed a great group of entrepreneurs, business leaders, government leaders, and other folks from the community.  Right at 3pm the doors opened and hard hats were passed out because this is still a construction zone.

Here is a picture of Steve Collens with a bullhorn welcoming the group at the entrance…

We made our way through the 50,000 square foot space – visiting the coffee shop, the large event space, the reserved co-working space, the accelerator space, the classrooms, and the suites.  Many questions were asked along the way about programming, partners, and how to apply.

Here’s a shot of the group in the event space in the northwest corner…

The 1871 team is thrilled at the response from the community in building this co-working center for digital entrepreneurs.  If you haven’t had a chance to go on one of these Hard Hat Tours, we hope to offer future ones, but we will have to take next weekend off as they are working on the floors so we can’t be in the space until they are done.  Please sign up for our 1871 mailing list for updates and to hear about the next one.

Thanks to all of those who came out yesterday – please tweet any pictures you took to @1871Chicago

Thanks to Governor Quinn and the State of Illinois for supporting 1871!

The 1871 team would like to thank Governor Pat Quinn and the State of Illinois for their generous support of our new center for digital startups.

 State of the State Address

Here is an excerpt from today’s State of the State address titled “Moving Illinois Forward”:

“We’re going to continue to think big in Illinois. Today, I’m announcing a $2.3 million dollar investment in “1871,” a new technology center at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago to foster and launch digital start-ups.”

Specifically, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) worked closely with us to make this investment a reality.  We look forward to giving the next generation of Chicago entrepreneurs a home with resources to build their startups and a community to plug into that will create new jobs in Illinois!
